WordCamp Vegas: Make stuff people want

I spent this weekend at WordCamp Las Vegas with several fellow Automatticians and WordPress contributors. I gave a talk and tried to take a fun approach: prepare lots of little topics and make the presentation interactive so we could jump around as needed. Everything was focused on experimentation, data analysis, and learning from customers, with the goal of making stuff people want — a phrase I unabashedly borrowed from Y Combinator. Given the unusual format of the talk, I’m not sure the slides are particularly useful. We didn’t go through nearly all of them, and they weren’t used in any particular order. That said, here they are.

  1. Judging by the slides, looks like it was a fun, interactive presentation! Nice pic selection :) Do you have notes of the actual talk, or is the video going to be posted?

    • There was a camera recording it so I think there will be a video posted. I didn’t really have any notes so unfortunately the slides are really all I can post.

The format was fun to try but definitely harder than I expected. Switching between topics on the fly at the audience’s choice means a lot of work to try to keep track of a reasonable narrative, which I stumbled on a few times. Still, I’m glad I tried it and it was at least a good personal challenge.

  2. If the video did get put up I’d really love to view it. Working on pushing my team in new directions and some of this is exactly where I’ve been heading, and I’d love the examples.
